6 social media platforms for marketing your business

Whether you’re a business owner promoting your own brand or a marketer building out a social strategy, the question isn’t which platform is biggest — it’s which one your actual audience uses, and whether it fits the way your brand communicates.

Before picking a platform, it helps to answer a few questions. Is your target audience actually active there? Does the format suit your brand? And realistically, how many platforms can you maintain well at once, rather than spreading yourself thinly across all of them?

1. Facebook

Facebook remains the largest general-purpose social network, and a large share of its users check in daily. Beyond personal browsing, many people use it directly to follow and engage with business pages, groups and events, which makes it a reasonable default starting point for most brands.

2. X (formerly Twitter)

X isn’t the lead-generation engine Facebook is, but it works well as a fast-moving news source and a place to tell an audience about a new product or service in real time.

3. LinkedIn

LinkedIn is built for professional and B2B marketing rather than consumer sales. Businesses use it to connect with other companies and professionals in the same or adjacent industries, which makes it worth prioritising if your customers are other businesses rather than individual consumers.

4. Instagram

Visual content consistently outperforms plain text posts across social platforms, which is what makes Instagram a strong fit for businesses with a genuinely visual product or story to tell. A brand that can hold attention with images and short video has a real shot at building a following there quickly.

5. Pinterest

Pinterest was once seen as a niche platform, but it’s since become a mainstream place for brands of all kinds to reach customers through visual content, not just the demographic it was originally associated with.

6. YouTube

YouTube is the second-largest search engine after Google itself, which makes it valuable for video marketing regardless of a brand’s size. The video doesn’t need to be highly produced — a clear, decent-quality video is often enough to represent a brand well.

Conclusion

Platform size matters less than fit. A large platform like Facebook covers a wide enough range of interests to suit most brands by default, but the right choice ultimately comes down to where your specific audience already spends its time.
